IND vs NZ: Ajinkya Rahane’s record is the best among Indian players who have captained at least 5 Test matches. Before the Kanpur Test match against New Zealand, the team has won 4 out of the 5 matches in which Rahane has captained.
In the last few years, whenever Virat Kohli could not play the match due to injury or took rest due to personal reasons, Rahane got a chance to lead the team as a stand-by captain and Rehane did his brilliant work on those occasions. He has also proved himself by performing.
He first got a chance to captain in the fourth Test match against Australia in Dharamsala in the year 2017. And then the series was tied at 1-1. In the last Test match, Ajinkya Rahane decided to include Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI despite Jadeja and Ashwin in the team and this decision proved to be correct. Kuldeep took 4 wickets in Australia’s first innings and also made his Test debut in Dharamsala.
The victory was registered by scoring 24 runs.
Hardly anyone had imagined the way Team India has come back under the captaincy of Rahane after being all out for just 36 runs in the Adelaide Test match in the year 2020-21 season. At that time Virat Kohli could not play after the Adelaide Test match due to personal reasons and Rahane got a chance to captain. On this occasion, along with playing a century in Melbourne, he led Team India to victory and on the last day of the last Test match in Brisbane, Team India won by scoring 324 runs in a day. This series win in Australia is considered one of the most memorable victories in the history of Indian cricket, and Rahane achieved this feat without the top 7/8 players.
Rahane has captained in 5 matches
Apart from Australia, the credit goes to Rahane’s name for winning the Test match against Afghanistan as well. Out of the 5 matches in which Rahane has captained, India has won 4 and 1 Test match was drawn which was played in Sydney. That is why if we look at the winning record, then it is 80 percent and the winning percentage of any Indian Test captain who has captained at least 5 matches is not that high.
