The first big performance in the men’s draw of this Australian Open is thework from a Frenchman. Adrian Mannarino dominated Hubert Hurkacz, seeded number 10 (and 11th in the ATP rankings), in three sets (6-4, 6-2, 6-3), Wednesday January 19, in the second round.

The first Grand Slam of the year therefore brings a breath of fresh air for the current 69th player in the world. Breaking out of the top 50 in 2021, his season started with a first-round elimination in Sydney.

After struggling to get out of the clutches of James Duckworth in the first round of Melbourne (6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1), Mannarino this time made his science of the game speak to sweep the 24-year-old Pole. Solid in service, he left only crumbs to his opponent (one out of ten converted break points).

Not as comfortable as on grass, Hurkacz confirms his difficulties in Major. Apart from Wimbledon (semi-finalist in 2021), he has never passed the second round in the other Grand Slam tournaments since the start of his career.

As for Mannarino, after 2018 and 2021, he again reached the third round of the Australian Open. Eliminated by Dominic Thiem then Alexander Zverev during these two editions, Mannarino will face Aslan Karatsev on Friday, titled last week in Sydney and semi-finalist of the Australian Open last year. If he wins, the Frenchman will reach the round of 16 for the second time in his career (after Wimbledon in 2018).
