Liga: police operation at FC Barcelona headquarters, ex-president Bartomeu arrested



The police have been carrying out an operation since Monday morning at the headquarters of FC Barcelona, ​​six days before the elections for the club’s presidency, we learned from a spokesperson for the Catalan regional police. This search targets the resigning former president Josep Maria Bartomeu who was reportedly arrested as well as several members of his administration, Óscar Grau, Román Gómez Ponti and Jaume Masferrer.

It is not only on the pitch that Barça is struggling. This morning, the police from the financial brigade burst into the Catalan club’s headquarters in the bowels of Camp Nou. A surprise search that took Barça leaders by surprise. “We are in the process of carrying out an operation right now with agents of the economic crimes department.“, a police spokesperson confirmed to AFP.

The resigning former president Josep Maria Bartomeu is in the sights of the police officers for unfair administration, corruption and money laundering. According to several media, he was arrested together with the director general Óscar Grau, the legal director Román Gómez Ponti and the adviser to the former president Jaume Masferrer.

According to Spanish media, the searches carried out at the headquarters of FC Barcelona are linked to the investigation into “BarçaGate”, a case that surfaced a year ago. On February 17, 2020, FC Barcelona denied being at the origin of a campaign of slander targeting club figures on social networks in order to improve the image of Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned on October 27 latest.

Cadena Ser radio had shown in an investigation that Barca paid € 1million in six separate invoices to the company I3 Ventures, with whom the club have since cut ties. “Have they been given the task of monitoring social media? The answer is yes. Have they been tasked with discrediting people or institutions on social networks? The answer is no. And we will sue anyone who accuses us of this“, then defended Bartomeu, who finally threw in the towel at the end of October.

This police operation comes six days before the elections for the presidency of FC Barcelona scheduled for Sunday, where the socios (supporters-shareholders) will be called upon to choose between Joan Laporta, Toni Freixa and Victor Font.
