Ligue 1: Morgan Sanson offers victory to a dying Marseille team

A flash of genius in the middle of the shipwreck. This is how we can summarize the victory of OM (1-0) on the road this Friday evening in Strasbourg, at the Meinau stadium. This lightning it came from Morgan sanson, yet a substitute at the start of the match, with a powerful and clear volley that lodged under the bar of Bingourou Kamara (72nd), offering three precious points to OM. The Marseillais thus extend their streak of six consecutive matches without defeat in Ligue 1 and temporarily climb back to fourth place. Better, they go on a 13th consecutive trip without defeat, their best series in the year since 2009.

One strike, one goal

The sinking, this is what the players ofAndré Villas-Boas for 90 minutes, far removed from the character and feeling of revolt that Olympian supporters could expect from their flock. As at the Dragon Stadium, OM lacked a leader, a captain in the storm, indicating the path to redemption. The Portuguese coach had however made five changes compared to Porto, notably dismissing Dimitri Payet and Dario benedetto on the bench at the start of the match. Did you say sanction? Certainly. The latter may have understood the message since they are both at the origin of the winning goal, the Argentinian even being the decisive passer of a clever recovery.

Before seeing the nets tremble on the strike of Morgan Sanson, the only one of his team this evening, OM continued to break records, all as depressing as each other. Mixture: before his goal on his first shot, Marseille had not scored for nearly 200 minutes – it was during the first period of the Champions League match against Manchester City (3-0 defeat) – and no ‘did not shoot once on goal during the first forty-five minutes for the first time since the end of December 2018, against Angers. The only situations – it would be presumptuous to call them “chances” – of the Olympians reside in a free kick of some kind, not even considered a strike, of Florian Thauvin captured by Bingourou Kamara (45 + 1) and a strong center from Morgan Sanson that Valere Germain could not resume (62nd). Before the lightning, then.

Caci hit the bar for Racing

Racing can even have regrets about this meeting, he who has not beaten OM since 2005. They were enterprising or at least sharper than their opponents. Organized in 4-2-3-1, the Strasbourg have multiplied the vertical game, taking advantage of the weaknesses of the middle Marseille diamond to center, on the right by Kenny Lala – who played his 100th elite match with the RCSA – and on the left by Anthony Caci. Strasbourg even approached Steve Mandanda’s goals in the minutes leading up to OM’s opening goal. Left-back Caci found the crossbar on a curl of the right foot deflected by Yuto Nagatomo (58th). Adrien thomasson of a too soft strike (62nd) and Habib Diallo (68th) also fired, without consequence. Above all, Strasbourg could have benefited from a penalty in added time (90 + 2) when Kevin Zohi was caught in the surface, at the limit of the reasonable, by Jordan amavi. The referee did not flinch or deign to call for video assistance.

The tough season continues for the RCSA, which already has eight defeats in ten games and is still stuck in 19th position. This Marseille was nevertheless acceptable, little in confidence but this is precisely what is sorely lacking in Alsace at the start of the championship.
