Dan Evans, meanwhile, beats a top player for the first time 5 and will find David Goffin (N.15) in the quarter-finals. A surprise quarterback since it could have been Djokovic-Zverev, and it will be Evans-Goffin.

• Last Frenchman in the running, Lucas Pouille is eliminated

Victim of repeated injuries since 2019, and after a blank year in 2020, Lucas Pouille gained confidence during his first two laps in Monte-Carlo. But the northerner lost this Thursday, April 15 against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (2-6, 6-7) in the third round. Quickly led, Pouille could still regret his two unconverted set points in the second set at 6-5. During the meeting, he felt discomfort in the odds and appealed to the doctor for treatment. He was the last Frenchman in the running.

Davidovich reached for the first time, at age 21, the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000. He will face Stefanos Tsitsipas who dismissed Cristian Garin, for a place in the semi-finals.

• It goes for Tsitsipas

The Greek, seeded N.4 and semi-finalist at Roland Garros, wins against Chilean Cristian Garin, clay specialist, in two sets (6-3, 6-4). This is the first time in 3 participations that Tsitsipas has qualified for the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo.

• Zverev leaves the Rock

After being beaten in the second round in Miami, world No.6 Alexander Zverev failed to win against David Goffin. The Belgian, world No.15, won by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (9/7) in 1h52 of play against the German and joined the quarter-finals. The four unconverted set points during the tie-break did not destabilize him. He will face Daniel Evans, winner of Novak Djokovic, in the quarter-finals.

♦ Nadal for a walk

On his rock of Monte-Carlo where he won 11 times, Rafael Nadal did not do in detail, as often, against Grigor Dimitrov, one of his favorite victims (15 victories in 16 confrontations). The Mallorcan easily dominated the Bulgarian (6/1 6/1), taking advantage of the latter’s 32 unforced errors, to slip away in his 16th career quarter-final at the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo. With only two small games won, Dimitrov saw himself inflicting one of his most crushing defeats of his career.

“This is one of my favorite tournaments, said Rafael Nadal following his victory, it is a great success today. It’s very hard to get back to the circuit but I am very focused. That’s what happened today, I win, I make very few mistakes, I do things in order. ”
