New Delhi, October 22
New Parliament building will be completed by October 2022, the Lok sabha Secretariat said on Friday.
A statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said construction of the project, which is part of a larger scheme to redevelop the iconic Central Vista in the national capital, will begin in December this year.
The statement said the new arliament building will have an office for every member of Parliament equipped with the latest digital interface, a Constitution Hall, MPs’ lounge, library, committee rooms, dining areas, and “ample parking”.
The current Parliament Building is an iconic structure designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker in 1912–1913. Construction began in 1921 and was completed in 1927, and was part of the larger project to build a new administrative capital for the British in the national capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed an ambitious project to undertake a major overhaul of the Central Vista. Estimated to cost Rs 20,000, the project has come under major criticism from historians and opposition leaders. Critics accuse the government of trying to rewrite history through the project. Some critics have questioned the need to undertake such a massive project at a time of economic crisis.
