1610 – Parliament of Paris appoints Louis XIII King of France. 1796 – French troops capture the Italian city of Milan. 1811 – Paraguay declares independence from Spain. 1817 – Birth of social reformer Devendra Nath Tagore. 1905 – Establishment of Las Vegas in Nawada, America. 1907 – Birth of revolutionary Sukhdev, who hanged himself with laughter. 1918 – First air postal service started in America. 1933 – Birth of TN Seshan, former Chief Election Commissioner of India. 1940 – Mack and Dick McDonald brothers start McDonald’s restaurant in California. 1958 – Soviet Union launches Sputnik III rocket.

1958 – Gift tax is introduced in India. 1967 – Birth of Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit. 1988 – Soviet Union begins to withdraw one lakh 15 thousand soldiers from Afghanistan. 1993 – Field Marshal KM Cariappa died. 1993 – United The nation decided to observe May 15 as International Day of Families. 1995 – China conducted a nuclear test in Lop Nor, PRC. 1995 – Allison Gargribs became the first woman to reach the summit of Everest without an oxygen cylinder. 1999 – Kuwaiti Women were given the right to vote in parliamentary elections by the government.

2001 – The right-wing coalition wins a majority in Italy. 2002 – The United Nations Security Council approves sanctions on Iraq. 2008 – The Sri Lankan government extended the ban on the terrorist organization Lise for two years. 2008 – California became the second US state after Massachusetts to legalize same-sex marriage. 2010: Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and Vice President of India, died.
