The last week of Vuelta 2021 got off to a smooth start with a 16th stage that was promised to the sprinters between Laredo and Santa Cruz de Bezana (180 km), Tuesday August 31. Something promised, something due with a new success of the elusive Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck Quick-Step) ahead of Jordi Meeus (Bora-hansgrohe) and Matteo Trentin (UAE-Team Emirates).

The Dutch sprinter is now a triple winner in this edition and more than ever leader of the points classification. Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché – Wanty Gobert) remains in the red jersey on this last quiet day for the leaders, before the start of the big explanations for this third week of the Tour of Spain.
